On Love and Money

So of us have boyfriends and some of us are married.

I've always learnt never to mix man and money.
Some men will refuse to love their wives if their wives don't drop money for them. It's sad.

In most home, the wives are the breadwinners.  I'm not saying this isn't okay but ehn! It's demeaning to the man.

So a friend of mine, Gbemi buzzed me yesterday morning and she said her friend acquired a property in Abuja, Nigeria. She's married and but her hubby isn't doing financially well.

I admire her die and I told Gbemi that I'm very happy for her friend. And I asked if the house was built using using her maiden name or her hubby's name or Mr and Mrs. Gbemi couldn't answer. I told her to speak to her friend about it.

Another friend, Labake stopped saving just before she got married to this guy. She's been working for about 6 years before she got married. She's been trying to get a car for the past of couple of years. When she eventually bought the car, the car was collected by the hubby. So technically she bought the car for him while she keeps going round London carless. Thank God for great transport system in the city of London.

Another friend opened joint accounts with her hubby immediately they got married and she hardly has access to the account. Hubby gives her peanuts to spend monthly.  Attimes she can't even afford to use her car to work cos she can't afford to buy fuel for her car for the full month on the peanuts she gets from her hubby.

This people I described above are always Mr and Mrs around town. The man will love up because of the money they are getting from these woman. They are the types you see the hubby will come and pick up after work, go to Owanbe's together.

But some woman that don't part with their money have to do virtually everything for themselves. They hubby won't give her loving! My friend Taiye once said, Lush as long as my money dey inside my pocket I no send loving.

My question is, Why can't some men love their women without them dropping money.

I remember dating one dude for a couple of months, all this dude was concern about was money. Borrow me some money, Fade. I'm broke are his usual words. I sojied myself and broke it off.

Women are suppose to be helpers not breadwinners. Some women have other responsibilities like taking care of their aged parents, taking care of their siblings and etc.

If you are in a toxic relationship like those I described above... You have to soji your self.

The Pressure from African Parents To Get Married!

THE PRESSURE FROM AFRICAN PARENTS TO GET MARRIED

Isn’t it amazing how African Parents can like to stress over marriage? I wrote about this before but I thought to address this issue again!

Its tiring… it really is! My friend Dayo is 36.  A dashing young man, a Development Head in one of the new generation banks, he has all the money he could possibly wish for.  Alas! He is unmarried.  His parents make life a living hell for him, especially as he is the firstborn.  His coworkers tell him to marry at the slightest opportunity so that, according to them, he will put on some weight.

“Dayo, Dayo, Dayo! How many times did I call you?” His father queried him.

“Three times, Dad. Kilo tunde”

“Why have you not yet gotten married? Are you not rich enough to feed a woman?”

“I don’t know, Dad.” Dayo replied.

“Or is it that you have sold your manhood to gain financial recognition?” Dayo’s father taunted him.

Dayo was very upset, but out of custom, remained silent.  His father went on and on about how he expected to see his grandchildren before he dies.

Dayo’s parents made sure he got married that same year to a lady that wasn’t his choice and sadly the union didn’t last long. They divorced 2 years later.

He’s back to being single.

This scenario is not uncommon in our society.  True, the ladies have it tougher than the men at a younger age, but men above the age of 30 who are doing well financially also face pressure from their family members and friends. What could be the reason for this? A few will be discussed below.

  • Sex: Most people who are sexually active want to get married so that they can have sex legally under an air of respectability. Men do not have it as bad as the ladies, but with religion that preaches the sinfulness of premarital sex, it follows that most people would want to salve their conscience by having sex within the confines of a marriage.

  • Security: Marriage does provide security, at least for women. The social, financial and material security are very real and this makes many parents wish to see their daughters get married.

  • Grandchildren: It is a biological drive within the human race to reproduce its kind. This is the major reason why many parents put pressure on their children to get married.

  • Need for acceptance: Acceptance is a basic human need. No parent wishes to feel like an outcast in the circle of their acquaintances so they pile the pressure on their children to marry so that they can join the grandparents

These are a few of the reasons why parents in African societies pressure their children to get married.  Parents, do take it easy on us, eh? We have enough on our plates trying to grow up and become responsible members of the society.  We do not need added wahala from y’all!

I’d say, take your time and don’t be pressured into getting married when you are not emotionally ready even if you are financially ready.

Mail from Reader: Irresponsible Husband

Hi Lush,

This is about my husband. Please don't post my name. This man isn't what I envisaged in my life. I pay for virtually everything. Pay house rent, Pay our children's school fees, Pay for food. Pay for everything. I'm fed up. Every day I regret marrying him. He had a very good job and was earning correct money and won't pay for much in the house. He only paid our house rent.

This man goes around with anything skirts. I have herpes now. I've told him no more sex cos I can't let him kill me. He resigned from his job in one of the major banks in Nigeria and started a petty business which was against my advice. I really wish I can't lift this burden off myself. I've been the only one responsible for our kids for the past 5 years. We have twins boys.

His parents keeps telling to have patience. I'm going mad here. I'm almost 35 years old and I can't say I own a land in Lagos. I'm suicidal but I'm keep praying to God to take the thoughts away because of my kids.

It's a shame I ended up with this kind of man. Everyone woman should be cherished. I should be the helper not the bread winner. I can't even attend parties with my friends cos I will think of cost of asoebi, make up, shoes and bag. I'd rather spend the money on my kids.

My spirit is so low. I just had to let this out. I feel so dead within me.

It's really sad. A lot of women go through this. I can't begin to imagine what it feels like to be responsible for everything in my household.
May the Lord comfort. Can you get his parents involved? They should be able to help speak sense to him.
I'm sorry you are going through this.

Getting Married To The Wrong Person For The Right Reasons

Let’s face it: it’s highly unlikely your theory of marriage will match up to the reality.  This is why many people marry the wrong person for the wrong reasons or conversely, marry the wrong person for the right reasons.  This might get you wondering: what are some of the right and wrong reasons to get married? Read on.

  • Right reason 1) Because Both of you are ready to start a family

Marriage still remains the best institution for raising a child.  This is because a child needs the love of its parents to thrive physically, mentally and emotionally.

  • Right reason 2) You are in love with one another.

Love still remains the prime reason for getting married.  This is because it takes a lot of sacrifice to look after a sick spouse, be there when the going is not so smooth, etc.  Love makes it a lot easier to put up with each other’s quirks and idiosyncrasies.

  • Right reason 3) You want to grow with your partner.

This is a very important reason to get married.  You must want to grow with your partner, both physically, emotionally and spiritually for it to work out.

Now that we have an idea of the right reasons to get married, what are some of the wrong reasons to marry?  Kindly read on.

  • Loneliness

  • You want a big fancy wedding.

  • For immigration purposes.

  • Your parents are pressuring you to get married.

  • Your friends are all getting married and you are feeling like the odd one out.

All these are wrong reasons to get married.  They cause a lot of heartache and pain and can ultimately lead to divorce.

You may now wonder: is it possible to get married to the wrong person for the right reasons?  Yes, it is. Below are reasons why it is possible to marry the wrong person for the right reasons.

  • We don’t understand other people.

Yes, it is possible to marry the wrong person for the ‘right’ reasons when you don’t understand other people.  This attracts you to the wrong person.  We need to understand that we are all basically crazy in varying degrees and people put on such a good show… at first.

  • We aren’t so used to being happy.

When both people in a union have a set definition of love and meet each other, sparks fly.  The people think they are in love with one another but we all should know that our definition of love stems from our childhood experiences at home.  This influences what we call love.  For most of us, love is tinged with manipulation, criticism, abuse, abandonment, you name it.  I don’t want to sound Freudian, but the subconscious mind is very powerful.  It influences what we are drawn to.  This is why we can marry the wrong person for the right reasons.

  • You want to stop thinking about love.

I know, it can be a pain to think about love when you don’t have it in your life. The heartache of trying to be philosophical about it after breakups, one-night stands, etc. can be truly overwhelming.  So you jump at the next available person and marry him when he pops the question.

These are some of the reasons why it is possible to marry the wrong person for the right reasons.  Because of the law of attraction, we get drawn to a man who seems to want the same ‘right’ reasons for getting married but on closer examination, we see that there is a discrepancy.

Learn to love yourself and be comfortable being single, and then you will be drawn to the right person!

Nigerians love weddings! Kilode? Anyway, a wedding is a time to come celebrate with the couple. The wedding song tells us what is on the couple’s mind and the crowd dances along to the music as it is playing.

Here is a list of the best Nigerian wedding songs.

Iyawo Mi by Timi Dakolo
Iyawo Mi is a highlife song produced by Cobhams Asuquo and sung by Timi Dakolo. It has soft soulful vocals with a traditional tune and is a love letter to the woman of your dreams. Regale your bride and the guests with this song.

Ada Ada by Flavour

Wedding Etiquette for Guests

Wedding etiquette is very important, especially in the modern time when everyone is in such a hurry and pays little attention to the niceties of life. It’s because of this I have compiled this list for you to know what to do and what not to do as regards wedding etiquette. Kindly read on.

What colour should I wear to the wedding?
Any cool colour is fine, so long as it doesn’t take the attention away from the bride. White outfits and large hats are strongly discouraged, as one should always bear in mind that you are not there to compete with the bride. It’s her day, after all!

Should I ever propose at someone’s wedding?
This is a tricky question. It really depends on the couple about to wed and the lady you wish to propose to. It is always a good idea to find out from the about-to-wed couple and your girlfriend’s friends if it is wise to do so. Their response will guide you. If you get a go-ahead, be sure to propose after the bouquet toss, so that you don’t steal the show away from the couple.

Are kids allowed to come with me?
It is not advisable to invite kids to a wedding. Weddings are adult affairs. The jokes, alcohol and late night dancing are truly not for kids. Do not be offended if the wedding card says ‘adults only’.

Now, I’m sure our readers have an idea of what to do and how to wow the bride and groom with their impeccable manners. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Pressure Nigerian Mothers put on their Daughters to get Married.

Last weekend, I spoke to my friend Wunmi... She said "I read your post Nigerian Mothers and Marriage its informative but too short oh. Fade, you need to emphasize on the pressure a bit more". So I decided to do another post on it.

Mummy, do you want me to beg men on the streets to marry me?

Should I pack my belongings into my male friends’ houses? Do you no longer believe that God’s time is the best? If you are tired of seeing me here, just tell me so that I can move out and rent an apartment of my own.”

My friend used these exact words when she was speaking to her mum about her single-hood status. My friend, Dayo is 32 and her parents are fast becoming anxious. They believe that she ought to be in her husband’s house by now. They are not pleased that she is yet to introduce a man as her fiancée to them. The pressure is already taking its toll on her as she no longer enjoys attending weddings and naming ceremonies.

Dayo couldn't even pick a call in front of her mum. Once her mum knows she's speaking to a man, she becomes extremely nice to her, she will bring juice for her to cool down during the conversation, once her mum see the conversation isn't going towards whats she wants to hear, she goes in the kitchen and starts screaming "Dayo! Dayo! so gbo mi ni? Can't you hear me? I need you in the kitchen right now". Furious Dayo has to end the call because she knows her mum won't stop embarrassing her.

Parents please, we know love us, no doubt about that but its gets really frustrating. There was a period I won't go home to see my mum on weekends because all she talks about is Marriage this! Marriage that! and I got married at 26 years old oh!

I suppose, they mean well with their pressures, as they have various reasons for doing so. Some of these reasons are:

  • They want to see their grandchildren before they die. Every Mother wants to be called Grandma. Y'all need to see the way my mum embraced that title.

  • They believe that having a daughter brings wealth, or at least a rich suitor. Thus, they want their daughters to marry early, especially if the parents are not rich so that they can begin to enjoy wealth through their daughter. Lol... This happened to my friend.

  • They parents already know that the daughters are having sex in the name of dating, which they frown upon. It is partly because of this they want their daughters to marry early to have sex within the legal and holy institution called marriage... We've all and/or still doing this!

  • They don’t want people to gossip about them. Lol.. I remember my mum telling me that.

As a single lady, you have to decide what's best for you. Constant communication with family is very important. At the same time, don’t get defensive and rebellious with your parents. It is only going to aggravate the situation.

Parents should beware not to pile the pressure on their daughters so as not to push them into wrong marriages they will regret. At the right time, the right man will come along.

Nextweek, I'll do a post on the pressure ladies transfer to their boyfriends because of the pressure they are been subjected to by their parents

Expectations of a Married Man.

The men asked for it! This is it.

So, you are now a husband. Congratulations! He that findeth a wife findeth a good thing, so the saying goes. As a man, you might be wondering how best to make your wife happy and treat her like the treasure that she is. Here are a few suggestions on what to do.

Treat your wife with respect.
It is important to treat your wife with respect, no matter how docile and submissive she may be. This is because treating her with respect will definitely endear her to you. If you say you are going to do something for her, stick to your word. Don’t back out at the very last minute.

Always speak the truth.
Get into the habit of speaking the truth and not withholding anything your wife wants to know. Tell her your whereabouts, your dreams, motivations, goals and aspirations. This makes for a great husband and a great marriage.

Be faithful to her.
It might seem obvious, but some men do not know that this is one of the expectations of a married man. When you married her, your wife expects you to be sexually faithful to her and not cheat on her. If you are no longer in love with your wife, rather than cheat on her, the honourable thing to do is to seek either marriage counselling.

Endeavour to build a strong bond with your in-laws.
It will make your wife very happy if she sees that you regard her parents and siblings as highly as she does. Even if you don’t get to see them often, do try to be kind and caring towards them.

Appreciate Her
Learn to say Thank You for everything she’s doing for the household. She’s not a maid. Learn to say Sorry/I’m Sorry, Please drop your man Ego and apologize when you hurt her. It goes a long way. Learn to please, if you want her to do something for you or the household don’t just order that woman around. Appreciation is key!

It is not so hard to be a happily married man. One can be a great husband and lover to his wife with these tips outlined above.

Expectations of a Married Woman

Marriage is a very serious affair. It ought to last for a lifetime, but sadly enough, some marriages end in divorce. It has become necessary for me to write about the expectations of a married woman at home so that my readers can take with them a few suggestions for their marriages. Whether you are religious or not, you can apply these tips and spice up your marriage because they are tried and true. They cut across all religions (or even the absence of one!)

Be understanding of your husband.
In a marriage, a woman is expected to be understanding of her husband. Men go through a lot of stress trying to ensure that there is always food on the table. They are not as emotional as women are and are more likely to tune you out if you start yelling and go ballistic in the house. If your husband does something that you don’t like, express it in a calm manner and listen for feedback.

Loyalty and confidentiality.
Your first loyalty is to your husband, not to your family or friends. Do learn to discuss all problems with your husband and not with outsiders. If you are having problems in your marriage, seek the opinion of professional marriage counsel lors rather than bringing up the matter with your friends. This will bring the respect of your husband and enable him to confide in you more and more.

Be your husband’s best friend.
In a marriage, a woman should aim to be the best friend her husband will ever have, his go-to person whenever he needs a good laugh or a shoulder to cry on. This is one expectation your husband has, even if he has never voiced it.
Nowadays, gender roles in marriages have become blurred, with the men now picking up the kids after school and women being the breadwinners in many families. The suggestions given herein, if properly applied, will help strengthen your marriage.

Here’s to a happy married life!

10 Rare And Romantic Honeymoon Destinations To Try Out This Year

Wedding season has arrived, While Dubai and Hawaii may top honeymoon destination lists pretty much everywhere, we believe there’s no better time than post-wedding for a couple to travel somewhere a little further off the beaten path.

After all, travel teaches us as much about ourselves as it teaches us about this person we’ve just committed the rest of our lives to. So forget about the Eiffel Tower and hiking along Kauai's blue beaches for a second—and think about these ten rare and romantic itineraries that might be an even better fit for you and your forever beau, whether you prefer to venture out or cuddle in.

01. FOR AVID OUTDOOR EXPLORERS: ICELAND Iceland: home of geysers, lava fields, mountain ranges, reindeer, and puffins has popped up on top 10 honeymoon destinations . With its smorgasbord of excursions, what more could an explorer ask for? From Game of Thrones film locations tours to taking in the spectacular Northern Lights, this Nordic island boasts abundant natural beauty. Now is a great time to travel, as Icelandair is offering a special on stopovers (more info on that here).

02. FOR HISTORY LOVERS: JORDAN

Jordan harks back to a bygone era. The city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Jordan’s most-visited tourist destination, is home to an ancient city cut directly into the red rock of the landscape. The facade may look familiar, as it has served as a backdrop for many Hollywood blockbusters including Indiana Jones and Transformers. You can also visit the ancient Dead Sea, geographically the lowest spot on Earth, and a natural health spa.

03. FOR WILDLIFE WANDERERS & ANIMAL LOVERS: SOUTH AFRICA

From busy cities to quiet wildlife preserves, golden beaches, and remote getaways, South African tourism is sophisticated, with no shortage of first-rate hotels and accommodations to fulfill your desire for a larger-than-life honeymoon. Spot adorable baby elephants at Addo Elephant Park, coral reef diving at Mabibi, or embark on a safari in Kruger National Park in hopes of encountering a lioness or three.

04. FOR CLASSIC ROMANTICS: VANCOUVER

Oh, Canada, your Niagara Falls are nicknamed "the world's honeymoon capital," yet you’re unfairly underrated. That ends here. While Toronto is a convenient destination to tour the Falls in the Northeast, foodie-central Vancouver lies just beyond the Pacific Northwest border. Spot migrating orca whales, cross a deep canyon with lush forests at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, cycle past scenic English Bay and Granville Island, known for its Public Market, art galleries and studios. For those with timeless tastes, take your pick of charming cities across our neighbor to the North, and you’ll lock eyes someplace swoon-worthy any time of year.

05. FOR KIDS AT HEART: TREE HOUSE POINT, WASHINGTON

Honeymoon in a tree house for the ultimate sleepover, no passport required. Washington state’s Tree House Point is a unique domestic destination, complete with a community of rentable tree houses furnished with all the amenities of a hotel room (though your bathroom is on the ground level). Featuring tree houses with creative names such as The Temple of The Blue Moon, you will find yourselves in a lush, green haven in the thick of nature. Book a massage, take a yoga class, tour the hiking trails, visit local restaurants, or just stay cozy inside your whimsical abode.

06. FOR EXOTIC BACKPACKERS ON A BUDGET: LAOS Laos,

Thailand’s neighbor to the northeast, provides incredibly memorable experiences with a less expensive price tag. In southern Loas, check out the waterfalls at Bolaven Plateau, take a cooking class, and spend a relaxing day at the spas on a side trip to scenic Vientiane. Everywhere you go, take in Laos’ tropical landscape and friendly people. It might be pricey to get there, but you'll save big in-country—even in touristy areas, restaurant meals cost between 30,000 - 60,000 kip, or about $3.60 - $7.30 per meal.

07. FOR HISTORY & FANTASY BUFFS: TRANSYLVANIA

In Transylvania, located in central Romania, you’ll find the medieval city of Brasov, featuring well-preserved ancient architecture like the 500-year old Black Church and Town Hall Square. It’s surrounded by halcyon mountains, rolling green fields, and quaint villages settled into the countryside. Take a quick trip to Bran Castle, home of 15th century Prince Vlad Tepes, upon whom Dracula’s infamous character is based. Here, wine tastings, folk festivals, mountain hikes, castles, caves and more await the couple enamored by old stories and enchanting tales.

08. FOR EASYGOING ECLECTICS: ALASKA

You can leave your passports at home and still experience a faraway land of mountains, gold mining, whale-watching and glaciers. But Alaska doesn’t have to include all outdoor adventures. Sure, you can go on a dog sled ride or spend an afternoon fishing for wild salmon. You can even catch the Northern Lights by trekking out to Fairbanks. Or, you can stay in while taking in the breathtaking scenery via an old-fashioned train tour or catch a glimpse of whales from a small cruise ship. Secluded lodges offer honeymoon packages complete with your preferred activities and local meals cooked especially by your private chef. Yes, please.

09. FOR SMALL-TOWN SWEETHEARTS: CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

More proof that you don’t need to leave the country to find romance. Charleston, South Carolina, voted America’s number one small city five years in a row, is a multifaceted destination full of Southern charm. Whether you want to stroll along Folly Beach, visit a nineteenth-century antebellum mansion, or take a walking ghost tour (which I highly recommend!), there’s something for everyone. Charleston is also known for its savory Southern cuisine. So be sure to try local dishes like shrimp and grits, crab cakes, and pimento cheese.

10. FOR BEACH-BODIES WHO WANT MORE THAN JUST ANY OLD BEACH: JEJU ISLAND, SOUTH KOREA

Jeju Island, South Korea has become a popular honeymoon hot spot for native Koreans. And it’s no surprise given the abundance of idyllic scenery and quirky fun to be had. You’ve got your pick of white sand beaches, three-tiered waterfalls, volcanic trails (Manjanggul Cave is one of the largest lava tunnels in the world!), bright fields of flowers for which the island is notorious, and a Teddy Bear Museum (aww!). Known as the “Hawaii of South Korea,” Jeju Island’s hotels are geared toward honeymooning couples, sure to make this the beach trip of a lifetime. If your honeymoon has passed, let us know where you went and what you loved most about it in the comments below. And if you're still looking forward to your sweet lune de miel, consider these options as you plan for the day that’ll begin your greatest adventure: marriage

BECOMING MRS ODEGBAMI

Here is the adorable love story of Modupe and Ibukun....

Her Story

I met Ibukunmi on a trip to Nigeria for my brother's wedding. His cousin Mrs Bonike Odegbami asked me to deliver a message to him regarding helping out with the orientation I was to conduct for students interested in attending the school I work for at his dad's office. When I saw him, I thought he was handsome and that was it. I remember him making fun of how horrible my handwriting and all. After the orientation and amazing trip, I came back to the states but we kept in touch. Couple of months later, he wanted to pay me a surprise visit but his cousin told me about it ( hehehehe). When he got here, we hung out and got to know each other more... That was the beginning of everything. I found myself going to Naija every year and he also visited. His drive for success, commitment to us, his love and affection for me made it easy to continue our relationship despite the distance. We did the long distance thing for some time until he moved down to the states. He asked me to be his wife and of course I said yes!. I am excited about spending the rest of my life with you and being Mrs Odegbami. You complete me.

His Story

When I first met Modupe, i thought she was a bright young girl with a smile that could light up Nigeria. We met in Lagos when she walked into my studio with a message from my cousin living in the US. I had not a clue she would sweep me away with her kindness, love and affection. Though we started off as just friends, it later evolved into a long distance relationship and i didn’t think it would work, she convinced me it would with her untiring effort and dedication to us and i truly appreciate her for that. We made trips back and forth to each other even when we were thousands of miles apart. Now that i have you by me, i never want to let go or say goodbye anymore. I love you.
