Every Woman: Episode Six

Oge was very excited as she left her house for the venue of the entrepreneurship initiative in Town Hall, Ikoyi. She hummed to herself as she drove from her house in Gbagada to Ikoyi.  As she got there, Oge alighted with grace, oblivious to the admiring glances of the other young women watching her.  She quickly walked into the hall, scanning for a suitable seat near the back of the hall.  Very good. She found a vantage point where she put a notebook and went in search of the restroom to freshen her makeup and have a bowel movement.

Eseosa woke up late on Saturday morning. She yawned and rolled over in bed, debating with herself whether to take the trip to the bathroom or not.  The heck with it. She got up and went to the bathroom to take a warm shower.  Once there, she looked into the mirror, scrutinizing for signs of crow’s feet and wrinkles.  My, what big eyes I have! She shook her head at her reflection and turned away, stepping into the shower tray for a hot shower.  Once done, Eseosa picked out a cute red jump suit and shook it before putting it on. She got into her car and drove straight to Ikoyi Town Hall, all the while thinking of Somade. What did I do wrong? She wondered.  With a mental shake, she focused her attention on the road.

Janet was in a very good mood this Saturday morning.  She woke up and went to the window, singing to herself. The sky took on a nice blue colour and she smiled as she watched the sunrise from the east.  A fleeting thought of Dare passed through her mind and she shook her head as she turned away from the window.  I won’t let Dare spoil today for me.  Imagine, he hadn’t even bothered to check on her last night. It is well, she said to herself as she showered and shrugged into a DAKOVA print dress.  It always flattered her figure and she hoped to wow the ladies there.

Jennifer had a dream about Mrs. Bewaji. In the dream, the woman came to her and told her to forget about ever getting married as all men were the same. Sorrowfully, she told the lawyer about how her husband had tied her up, raped her and then butchered her, amid her screams.  With a start, Jennifer woke up and sighed sadly.  Here I am on Saturday morning and I’m becoming maudlin. She had her bath, dressed and drove down to Ikoyi.

Jadesola was in a hurry this morning.  She had forgotten to set her alarm for 6 a.m and she woke up by seven.  Oh no! will I make it to the venue of the program on time? How can such a stickler for punctuality like me arrive late? Stuff happens, her alter ego consoled her.  You’ll live! She got into her car and drove down to the venue, all the while listening to an audio book on how to fascinate your audience.

When Oge came out of the toilet cubicle to wash her hands, she felt someone’s eyes on her back.  She turned around and saw a dark-skinned lady eyeing her appreciatively.  When the lady saw she was looking at her, she smiled and spoke.

“Hey, I’m Eseosa Rahman and I must say that I love your bag!” Oge smiled shyly.  “What’s the name of the designer?” Eseosa asked.

“Jimmy Choo,” Oge replied.

“Wow, it’s really nice. Your name is?”

“Oge Tosin-Igwe. I’m a test lead with Verizon bank. It’s nice to meet you,” she said as she extended her slim hand for a handshake. With a smile, Eseosa shook her hand and asked her for her phone number. You never know when I’ll need your help in future.

Janet sashayed into the venue of the program, humming to herself. She was so happy that she missed a step and ran smack into a lady walking into the hall.  It was Jadesola, her favourite actress! What a pleasant surprise.  She apologized and asked the actress to please take a picture with her. Jadesola smilingly obliged her.  She was used to people fawning over her.  As they were posing for the picture, Jennifer walked in.  She too recognized Jadesola from her favourite soap opera, Love wins and asked to pose with her.  Janet made a face at Jennifer and smiled when she saw that Jennifer was about to change her mind.  So the three ladies walked into the hall together and chose a vantage position.

During the lunch break, Eseosa and Oge walked to the buffet table together, where the other three young ladies were standing, laughing away. They recognized Jadesola and Eseosa pulled Oge along to take a picture. The five ladies excitedly told each other how much they loved the program as they discussed the highlights.

They exchanged phone numbers and decided to meet at Elegushi beach the next Saturday for a girls’ day out.
