2016 has been a great year for rising star, Adekunle Gold, who has been rising like a star from another galaxy with his unique lyrics. The much-awaited album Gold was released recently and everyone’s nerves have been taut with expectation, waiting for what he will drop this time around.
The purpose of this album review is to whet the appetites of my readers and encourage them to listen and download Adekunle Gold’s songs online. I have no conflict of interests oh! No one is paying me to review this album so you don’t have to feel I am being biased.
Just like Kanye West who came and revolutionized rap in the USA, Adekunle Gold has set out to revolutionize the Afro hip hop scene with his mature lyrics and rhymes which he gave to us freely in this album. No profane lyrics or obscenities in this album: rather we are regaled with love as it really is, seen through the eyes of this upcoming songwriter.
Luckily for us all, Adekunle Gold did not disappoint us in this album and I have selected my five best songs from the album to be reviewed.
Nurse AlabereThis favourite song of mine is ambitious: starts off slow and takes on a fast, lively pace. Minimal beats materialize from the Shekere and parts conjured into rhythms by masterfulness of the drums. A song in which the shekere and drums seem to be happy collision as they play along to the Yoruba rhymes of a man trying to move on from a failed relationship. This is definitely a ballad to watch out for on Adekunle Gold’s album.
No ForgetThis song is a unique one in that it starts off with chatter and a dense echo. This particular track is a collaboration between Adekunle Gold and his rumoured love interest, Simi. So challenging a songbird by herself, Simi and Adekunle redouble that challenge. Touched by the hand of love, this track beckons to the finer impulses within its listeners. The two songbirds achieve this scintillating effect by incanting hypnotic mantras.
ParadiseThe drop from the dense echo of the previous song to the lovely voice of Adekunle Gold serenading us with the promises of bliss in Paradise is definitely something to snuggle into with its disparate vibe; the powerful singing voice of Adekunle Gold carries this track through and regales us. A good song.
WorkAdekunle Gold adds an empowered attitude to the party rhythms of this song. In this track, he took the almost suggestive tone of Rihanna and Drake’s Work and made his Work swing with a lively Afro drum beat. The song speaks of coming down to earth in our search for our daily bread instead of reveling in fantasies. This is a song to look out for on club party playlists.
Fight for YouThe carnal, edgy, bass-driven throb of Fight for You finds Adekunle Gold building to sound like music from other spheres, while unexpected rhymes in Yoruba writhe within in this blissful Afro hip hop ( or should I say Afro R&B) track. Adekunle Gold heats up this song with the traditional Yoruba music style we all know him for. In this song, the ethereal rhymes play along to Adekunle Gold boasting about fighting for his lover.
You gotta love this Album!!!
